This was my Halloween pumpkin a few years ago. I looked online for inspiration and found that there are lots of websites with patterns to follow. Having found one I liked, I drew it on freehand with a marker pen, and after I'd scooped out the seeds and mushy part and thinned out the inside a little to make it easier to cut, I used a sharp knife and cut out the pattern.
When I cut out the little stars, I kept the cut-out parts and hung them inside the pumpkin, behind the cat. I used some invisible sewing thread and a needle to push it through the flesh, then did the same thing through the lid so they dangled inside and made the candlelight flicker. For the glowing eyes of the cat I cut through the skin and scooped a little bit of flesh out, but didn't go all the way through.
A good tip is to use battery powered candles, especially if you're having a party with a lot of people, have children or pets, or are using your pumpkin lantern outside as they won't get blown out by the wind! You can find them in most poundshops or cheapy shops such as Poundstretcher, Home Bargains or B&M.
